Adobe Creative Cloud SuiteAdobe has been the preferred tool of graphics professionals for decades. Some at the UNF library have been using Photoshop for several years for a variety of tasks but it wasn’t until the implementation of Digital Commons and the formation of the Digital Projects department in 2011 that the Adobe Creative Suite became a core tool for our business processes. In addition to Photoshop, Acrobat (formerly Acrobat Pro) became integrated into our workflows as we edited images and embedded metadata into TIFFs, JPEGs and PDFs for the archives. One of the early major challenges was versioning the software. At the time, we lacked the funding to acquire the latest license for every computer so early adopters used older versions while newer users received the latest release. This caused significant difficulty for the veteran user who was asked to provide training. Should the more experienced user train on the old software that the newer user didn’t have or learn the interface and features of the new software that couldn’t access? Eventually this problem was resolved when, fairly recently, the campus invested in a site license for the Adobe Create Suite which has allowed us to standardize on a common platform. While Creative Suite is a collection of many software packages, the library continued to primarily use Photoshop, Acrobat and Premiere (Adobe’s Video editing tool).

With the site license, we can move beyond the software packages we have used for years and, possibly, enhance productivity by using aplications that better suit our specific needs. This time training will need to be more formal as we investigate software few, if any, have used before. Beginning in the Spring of 2014, we began working with NEFLIN to determine the feasibility of comprehensive training for the library. We focused on the tools we currently use and investigated some complimentary tools that we thought could easily integrate. Today, NEFLIN has announced that they will offer in-depth Adobe training through New Horizons Computer Centers this summer. Beginning July 1 with a full day of Adobe Photoshop CC and followed by a second, more advanced day on July 8. Next up will be Acrobat XI July 15 and 22. On July 29 and August 5, NEFLIN will offer InDesign. InDesign is Adobe’s desktop publishing application and the successor to Pagemaker, one of the first such software applications in computing. While desktop publishing is synonymous with the creation of physical material like newletters, brochures, and newspapers, InDesign is also suitable for creating digital content like digital magazines and EPUBs. Finally, on August 12 and 19, we will have an opportunity to explore and discover Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is a vector graphics editor that allows users to create digital images or illustrations that are resolution independent. That means the image does not lose quality no matter how much it is resized.

All of the details of these workshops may be found via the links provided or through NEFLIN’s Workshop Calendar. If you are a Florida library staff member, NEFLIN classes are free of charge. Register early and be sure to take advantage of the opportunity.
